Report…
On March 5th 2007 the first body was found. Jannet Anne Wilkes went missing from her parent’s home on Temple Drive, three days before. The whole department thought the parents were involved. I am not sure why I didn’t believe it. The Homicide Captain was skeptical and I couldn’t blame him. I was after all just transferred into homicide from vice 2 months before. The ‘Vic’ was found badly burned on the edge of the Bow half a mile down from city center. Coroner’s report said there was no blood left in the body, just plain weird.
Over the next 3 weeks, (see files 2376 to 2390) there were 12 other abductions of women ages 12 – 32 across Calgary. I don’t see why nobody else in the department made the connection. I know there was no linking evidence, I know the MO was different; I know the women did not fit into a psych grouping. I just knew they were connected. I have always been good at tracking people, the guys and girls in Vice use to joke I was part bloodhound.
I started seeing patterns. It was odd, I’d show the Captain and he would tell me he couldn’t see it. The other guys in homicide couldn’t either. The Captain finally told me to grab a partner and run with it. I think he did it more to get me and my crackpot ideas out of his hair. I have never liked working with a partner, so I did as he asked I just neglected to tell my partner where I was going…
On Saturday, April 21st 2007, I Sgt. John Roland Woods did enter the Herbert Funeral Home on 1st and 17ave SW, without a warrant. I observed a suspicious white van prowling the area of Bankview around 9:15 pm and began following it in an unmarked vehicle. The van in question did slow several times when approaching women walking alone in the area. I cannot explain my motives save the van seemed, wrong. It parked behind the funeral home and two suspects entered loading what appeared to be a body bag. I did not call for back up at this time. I fear I act sometimes with a bit too much ‘lone wolf’ attitude. I gained entrance through a loading door and proceeded towards the basement after determining the main floor was vacant.
I advanced into the basement with stealth. I did not draw my weapon at this time. I could hear two men talking farther in so I proceeded into the lower end of the building. The two men appeared to be hooking a young woman, (see file 2395) to a transfusion machine used to remove blood and insert formaldehyde in a corpse. Nothing appeared out of sorts as they started the procedure until the woman started screaming. The next few moments were a blur. I yelled and identified myself pulling both my badge and sidearm. The two men, (see file 2393) move with incredible speed, faster then I could move they were on me. My sidearm was sent flying and it quickly became a melee. Both men were obviously well trained in martial arts, and far stronger then they appeared at first. I have to admit at this point to slipping into a bit of a rage, I don’t remember much more of the fight save that when it ended they both laid bleeding and unconscious with severe though not life threatening injuries. I moved to the woman and removed the hoses attached to her, that is when I noticed she had been strapped to the table. Before I was able to affect her release, a third man appeared in the only other doorway. I cannot say for certain when he arrived as in the heat of the rescue I admit to having been preoccupied.
The man identified himself as Dr. Shouse, and then stated I was trespassing. I am moving into speculation here, but the ‘smell’ of the man was just wrong. He felt to me like dead meat if that makes any sense. I am by no means saying I had any homicidal intentions towards the man. It was more of a feeling of death about him. Needless to say my hackles were up. I identified myself and told him to hit the ground and place his hands behind his back. He did so. I approached and got my handcuffs out, but when I stooped to use them, he… I am sorry I have no other way to say it. He just vanished. I stood to see where he might have gone, that’s when the door to the incinerator opened. I turned towards the door but nobody was there. That is when I was attacked from behind. The blow was substantial. I know I showed no injuries after at my debriefing, but the hit was a solid one. Shouse then picked me bodily from the ground and moved to through me into the furnace. I turned, managed somehow to get a hold of his upper arm, and pull him into an Omaklata move, as we are trained. The fight was a brutal one but it seemed he was able to take any punishment I applied without slowing in the least. I can only assume he was using a pain suppressor. The woman screaming, the fight, the sounds now of other women screaming coming from the open doorway this man had come from. I admit I lost track of the other details of the fight. I lost complete control. At some point I learned afterwards, I must have physically broke his left arm bad enough to remove it entirely from his body. He didn’t seem to notice. The fight moved to the front of the furnace and I did the only thing I could think of. Fearing not only for my life, but also for the women who I could still hear screaming. I threw him into the furnace. I cannot describe the screams he made. I had to close the door as he produced a knife of some length and tried to come out with more strength then I could think of. He dented the steel door in his efforts.
Once I had calmed myself somewhat, I called in back up and freed the woman. I proceeded into the building and discovered 10 other women, (see files 2378 to 2388) all of whom had gone missing. I brought all of the women together and waited for back up. When it arrived I turned over the women and my sidearm. I then submitted myself for questioning and arrest for break and enter, assault, and man slaughter. Charges pending.
I submit this report after some time to reflect and await the pending internal investigation into my actions.
Sgt. John Roland Woods.
Note:
Sgt. Wood’s report earmarked for disposal. Have him removed from active duty and put on paid suspension until I tell you what to do with him. In the mean time have the funeral home cleaned and all evidence destroyed.
